Louisville Art Association 2010 19th Annual National Juried Photography Show

The show will be held at the Louisville Center for the Arts, a beautiful turn of the century school house that has been renovated to make it a state of the art gallery space. The cupola was added in 2004 to make the renovation complete. The Center is located in Memory Square Park, 801 Grant Street, Louisville, Colorado. The July 4th Celebration draws thousands of visitors to Louisville and to the Photography Show at the Cultural Art Center with live entertainment, arts and craft booths, food and games at the Louisville City Park.

Timothy B. Anderson is the former publisher/managing editor of CameraArts magazine, and now produces "Red Dog News," a bi-weekly photography related e-newsletter that goes out to more than 16,000 subscribers. For his photography, he specializes in fine art nudes, and recently participated in the show, "1x15." Anderson is a co-founder of Rio Grande Workshops (www.riograndeworkshops.com), and manages several photography websites & blogs, as well as his personal site (www.timothybanderson.com).

He has juried all around the country; for Review Santa Fe, Review LA, Photo Lucida, The Center for Fine Art Photography, The Gala Awards, The Palm Springs Photo Festival, etc. He is also a published poet, and recently released a collection of his work, "Frame of Mind."

"I look for the unique in a setting; something that might make me take a step back in order to see it more clearly. I work in the same manner in the studio. Surprise is the most invigorating element of my creative process .No model or location is the same and it is up to me to find that "moment", that epiphany which forces me to press the shutter. I do very little digital manipulation in my work, only a little tinting or contrast adjustments. When I photograph, I shoot with the whole scene in my mind. The less "after capture" work I have to do, the better. My desire is to convey that surprise into the finished picture, and enable the viewer to come away from that image with a new sense of awareness."

My grateful thanks to juror Liz Lee and the folks at PhotoPlace Gallery!

Exhibition dates: July 20th - Aug. 7th

This juried exhibition explores the many ways in which photographs can incorporate words and the meanings that can result from such combinations. Juror Liz Lee selected forty photographs for exhibition on the walls of PhotoPlace Gallery and on the gallery website. She also chose an additional thirty-five images for PhotoPlace's "On-Line Gallery Annex." All seventy-five photographs will be reproduced in a full color exhibition catalogue available for purchase from Blurb Books.

JUROR'S STATEMENT: Photographs are very good at conveying actions and information but not so good at explaining ideas. Words are the language of explanation; but language is an abstract system, open to subjectivity and bias and not very good at precise description. Although we tend to think pictorially, when we need to communicate we do so with language, requiring the brain to deal with contending sets of messages. Consequently combining image and text provides a rich opportunity to delve into psychological and informational relationships between visual and word. The images I have chosen for this exhibition bridge that communication gap between images and spoken language by investigating the synergy between photographs and words. The words and symbols used in these works may describe and defend or may mask and obscure, but in each case the question remains, what do the words picture and what do the pictures say?

Liz Lee is a Professor of Photography in the Department of Visual Arts and New Media at the State University of New York at Fredonia where she has been serving as Department Chair since 2005.

Theme: Daniel Pink’s book, "A Whole New Mind – Why Right-Brainers will Rule the Future" is the inspiration for the title. The theme for 2010 is BRAINSTORM. Art work that documents, analyzes and/or is inspired by intellectual activity, thought processes, dysfunction, and/or problem solving of the human mind will be favored.

Jurors:

Susan Aurinko is a photographer, curator and gallerist for Coalition Gallery, Kemper Gallery IIT, and Prudential Plaza. In addition, Aurinko served as owner and curator of Chicago's FLATFILE galleries for ten years. An exhibition exhibition of her photography, entitled STILL POINT, INDIA, will open at Kriti Gallery in Varanasi, in 2010, and will tour India over the next two years. www.aurinkophoto.com

Tricia Van Eck is Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art. This past year she co-curated the Chicago presentation of Buckminster Fuller: Starting with the Universe and coordinated the Jeff Koons retrospective. She has curated and coordinated numerous other exhibitions for the MCA including Mapping the Self and Kerry James Marshall: One True Thing - Meditations on Black Aesthetics.

A Whole New Mind 2010 – Brainstorm
is a national juried art competition with $2000 in prizes, the top prize being $1000. The Visual Arts Gallery at Governors State University and the Art on Campus Program’s additional locations accommodate over 150 works of art, a large number for a show of this kind. GSU is the home of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park and is located in the South Suburbs of Chicago.

PhotoPlace Gallery is honored to announce that Keith Carter was the juror for our first annual PHOTOPLACE OPEN Exhibition. From over 1700 photographs submitted by nearly 300 photographers, Keith chose forty for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery in May and in PhotoPlace's on-line gallery. He also selected an additional thirty-five photos for the "On-Line Gallery Annex." All accepted work will be
included in a full-color small book publication that will be available for purchase.

Internationally revered as a photographer and educator, Keith Carter has shown his remarkable work in over 100 solo exhibitions in thirteen countries around the world. He has also produced thirteen books, including Ezekiel's Horse, From Uncertain to Blue, A Certain Alchemy and, most recently, Fireflies. Among his numerous honors are grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Lange-Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, the University Professor Award from Lamar University, and the Texas Medal of Arts.
