Caribbean Rhythms

The location is Westway Plaza on Cumberland St, Cheapside, Bridgetown, St Michael, Barbados (an adventure to track this down via the signs on the building!)

One quote resonates with me:

My most important problem was to destroy the line of demarcation that separates what seems real from what seems fantastic. Because in the world that I was trying to evoke that barrier didn't exist.
(Gabriel García Márquez 1969)

I believe this is my perspective.

I explore this by juxtaposing unexpected combinations of shapes and ideas - to break illusionary lines of demarcation.

Here, I was fascinated by a dynamic instability - between perception of the building and of the reflected building - as with a necker cube.

Also, a mathematical rhythm - the reflected building, in turn, contained other reflections, including those of the first building, which in turn...

And it seemed as though each pane, while contributing to those collective themes, also competed to tell it's own story. Some panes did not reflect, but instead disclosed hints of things inside. Other panes suggested other rhythms - such as in the fourth row (from the top) - a series of panes within panes.

I was also fascinated by how the electric wire (left, middle) connected the two buildings and how - simultaneously - the same, but reflected, wire connected the real and reflected buildings. An illusionary line of demarcation.

I am further investigating these themes by deliberately altering the content of panes in similar images.
