Intimate Landscape issue of Open to Interpretation

A publication that pairs photography with prose and poetry.

Landscapes conjure images of vast, sweeping scenes, but the details captured by a photograph can turn a seemingly impersonal setting into an intimate story. It's up to the artist to define what constitutes an intimate landscape, be it representational, non-representational, urban, suburban or rural.

30 images out of 1,500 were chosen for the publication.

Each volume of Open to Interpretation represents a unique collaboration between photographers and writers. The content for each book is sought via two distinct calls for entry/submissions:

Photography "Call for Entry." After judging takes place, the selected images will be posted online.

Writing "Call for Submissions." After viewing the selected photographs online, writers craft and submit an interpretation of an image in poetry or prose. Two written works will be selected for each photograph. All writers are welcome to submit work provided it is written in English, not more than 300 words, and submitted via email. All work must be original and previously unpublished, either in print or electronically.

The collaboration will result in a published book.

Photography Judge

Karen Irvine is Curator and Manager of Publications of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago. She has organized over thirty five exhibitions at the MoCP and other institutions and written essays for numerous artist monographs and publications including Art on Paper and Contemporary. Irvine is a part time instructor of photography at Columbia College Chicago. She received an MFA in photography from FAMU, Prague, Czech Republic, and an MA in art history from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Open to Interpretation judges are asked to choose
photographs that speak to them, that have something to say, and/or tell a story. Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. All work is reviewed anonymously by the judge and decisions are final.

Clare O'Neill, Creator + Manager:

"The comment I heard most often regarding my work was "the image tells a story" but I was never sure what story it was telling. When I started to ask I realized that people had their own wildly different interpretations of the images.

Open to Interpretation was the name of my first solo exhibit. There were 12 images and 24 different stories and poems. Friends wrote some of the stories and some were written by people I had never met before the exhibition opening.

I found the interaction between the image and text combined in such a way that the two of them together were greater than either of them independently. At first I just thought it was an interesting twist to an exhibition but found the words added another dimension to the work - allowing me to rediscover the image in ways that I had never imagined.

I'm a tactile person. I love having something to touch and hold. I love books. Beautifully designed and produced books. I find there to be physical connection with the work that doesn't exist when viewing images hanging on the wall. It feels more intimate with a lasting appeal.

I'm also an entrepreneur and find myself creating arts based programs and events. Somewhere, somehow I've always wanted to be part of a creative publishing service. This juried book competition was born of that first solo exhibition - an opportunity for photographers, writers and poets to collaborate and be part of something bigger than themselves.

I'm looking forward to all your interpretations."

About The Juror

JUROR Amalia Pizzardi was born in Italy, where she studied Art and Semiology at the University of Bologna with Umberto Eco and received a PhD in Social Sciences. She organized the seventh and eighth editions of the Lyric and Cultural Festival "Valle d'Itria" presenting "Le jeu de l’amour et du hasar" by Marivaux and "Turandot" by F.Busoni, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism and commissioned by the Paolo Grassi Foundation.

When living in Mexico, Dr. Pizzardi became firmly convinced that Art is a vehicle for social change, so she organized artistic events within the framework of cultural interchanges with other countries, including Brazil, Colombia, Finland, France, Guatemala, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay and the United States. She has participated for years as a juror in competitions and artistic events organized by CNN, the Red Cross Art Auction and Juannio, Latin American Masters’ Auction.

Amalia is the Founder and Director of the art gallery "The Gallery Art & Design," dedicated principally to Latin American art on the vanguard, which has had a presence in Mexico, Italy and the United States; participating in international art fairs such as ArtMiami y MiArt in Milan. She is also the Founder and President of "Colors of Life," a non-profit that organizes each year an International Photo Competition to support various charitable causes.

Identities Now will be a book comprised of select images submitted by photographers around the globe. The mission is to explore the current state of the photographic portrait through gathering the best work from a diverse cross-section of artists. Every photograph was reviewed by the selection committee, which is comprised of top professionals in photography and the arts. Portraits were chosen based solely on photographic merit in the eyes of this group. It will be a dynamic snapshot of what is happening in contemporary portrait photography, and will serve to promote and celebrate the photographers whose work is chosen.

David Harris, Design Director of Vanity Fair magazine since 1995. Worked with many of the leading photographers of the past two decades: Harry Benson, Brigitte Lacombe, Annie Leibovitz, James Nachtwey, Helmut Newton, Nick Knight, Mary Ellen Mark, Steven Meisel, Herb Ritts, Snowdon, Bruce Weber... Art Director of D magazine in Dallas, Texas. Graduate of the University of Kansas; work recognized by the American Society of Magazine Editors, the Society of Publication Design, the Society of Illustrators, American Photography, American Illustration, Print Magazine and Graphis.
Laurie Kratochvil, Laurie Kratochvil is a legendary photo editor. She began her career at the LA Times. Rolling Stone in 1982. Founding photo editor (1994) for In Style Magazine and worked there until 2005, before starting her own visual consulting business, working with magazines such as Self, Men’s Health and Essence. Book projects include Africa by Herb Ritts, and Cyclops by Albert Watson, as well as Watson's two-volume book on Las Vegas. Board member of The Society of Publication Design, a jury member of World Press, and on faculty at The ICP.
Sam Shahid, Worked with Calvin Klein in the 1980's, and since has been constructing images for top fashion designers in the world. In 1993 founded Shahid & Company, his own creative design firm and advertising agency. He has helped reform the images of national retailers such as Abercrombie & Fitch and Banana Republic, while creating original and starkly contrasting images for designers ranging from Versace to Valentino, Gucci to Perry Ellis. Has designed numerous fine art and photography books for Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, Kelly Klein, Ellen Von Un Werth, and others.
Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ portraits are in the collections of numerous museums. In 2004, seven hundred of his art world portraits were accepted into the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He is a contributing photographer at Vanity Fair, and has published several books, including: The Black List (2008), Movie Stars (2007), and Face to Face (2006). He also produces and directs films: Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart premiered at Sundance and won a Grammy, Thinking XXX aired on HBO in 2004, and The Black List: Volumes 1-3, which also aired on HBO.
David Schonauer, former Editor in Chief, American Photo Magazine: David Schonauer was editor-in-chief of American Photo Magazine for twenty years. Worked with and published many of the world's most famous photographers, including Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, James Nachtwey, Annie Leibovitz, Mary Ellen Mark, Herb Ritts, Ansel Adams, and Harry Benson. Written for publications as diverse as Atlantic Monthly, Outside, Worth, The New York Times. Currently working on a book project about the history of sports photography. Writes a weekly blog "I Like to Watch".
Peter Hay Halpert, Principal, Peter Hay Halpert Fine Art: Peter Hay Halpert is an art dealer, professor, author, lecturer, curator and collector. He has authored numerous books, including several monographs on Hiroshi Sugimoto, as well as over 600 articles on photography. He has been a Contributing Editor of The Art Newspaper, Photograph Magazine and American Photo. Peter has taught at colleges and universities throughout the world. He served on the Guggenheim Museum Photography Committee when it was first started, and work from his collection has been exhibited at numerous institutions in the U.S.

SEEING MYSELF, SEEING OTHERS: The Art of the Portrait

From the earliest days of photography, portraiture fascinated practitioners of the darkroom arts. While many commercial photographers earned their living recording appearances, some turned their lenses on themselves and others with surprising results. Today portraiture--of self and or of others--yields some of the most probing images in contemporary photography. Photographers explore humor, discomfort, intimacy, and the uncanny to photograph faces, and sometimes even souls.

PhotoPlace Gallery is pleased to welcome Andy Bloxham as juror of "Seeing Myself, Seeing Others: The Art of the Portrait." For this exhibition Andy selected forty portraits for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery. He also chose an additional thirty-five portraits for the gallery’s "On-Line Annex." All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalogue available for purchase.

Juror's Statement:
Being asked to juror this exhibition was an honor, while the actual process of doing so was quite difficult. The idea of a portrait can take on many interpretations, as the hundreds of submitted images submitted proved. Narrowing it down to the finalists was no easy task. Photographers submitted many, many great images that required repeated rounds of views to get down to the chosen work you see now.

What makes a great portrait? Is it the expression on the face or the presence of the form? There is no one specific formula. The headless body in Heidi Lender’s image strikes a contrast to the frozen gaze in Frank Hamrick’s work. These different images show it is not just the aesthetic or look that captivates, but the emotions a portrait conveys. Even the emotion isn’t to a standard. Content can be serious, such as the work from Mariana Bartolomeo and Megan Otto, or humorous, from Ashley Matthews and Tom Johnson. Each artist approached a topic from his or her own unique perspective. An oncoming light’s effect takes on two different mindsets with Sergei Isaenko and Bryan Bankston’s photographs. Sometimes the idea of a portrait doesn’t even involve a literal human, as is the case with Laura McCormick’s work.

I could go on and on about each of the selected artists and why each image works so well, but there is a common thread behind all selected work. For reasons specific to each image, the chosen photographs are the ones that caused me to pause and investigate further. As I looked through the submissions, the work you see now made me forget all other images for just a moment. They struck emotional connections that invested me in their messages. Congratulations to the photographers, and best of luck in your future work.

For the purposes of this exhibition, works on paper include, but are not limited to, monotypes, photography using any photographic process, hand-pulled prints from any printmaking process (etching, solarplate, linocut, lithographs, etc), watercolor, acrylic, or oil on paper, pastel, charcoal, pen and ink, drawings, collage on paper.

About The Juror
Dan Welden is a master printmaker, painter, teacher and author. He has been making prints and works on paper for over 40 years. His work has been shown in over 65 international solo exhibitions in museums and galleries and over 500 group exhibitions in the U.S., Europe, China, Australia, New Zealand and Peru. His work is in many public and private collections throughout the country including the Amity Art Foundation, Baltimore Museum of Art; Portland Museum of Art; and Temple University, among many others.
Dan is an innovator at the forefront of the alternative health and safety oriented movement of printmaking, and the originator of a printmaking technique called the Solarplate method. Dan is the Co-Author with Pauline Muir of 'Printmaking in the Sun' published by Watson Guptill in 2001, the comprehensive manual of solarplate methods. He is currently working on an updated edition.

As a teacher, Dan continues to inspire students around the world in workshops where he demonstrates how to make solarplates and print both intaglio and relief plates. His has run month-long summer workshops at the Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy, attended by students from Europe, Australia and America. He is a past president of the Society of American Graphic Artists. He has taught printmaking at several colleges in the New York area including Stony Brook University, Suffolk Community College, Long Island University Southampton, and Central Connecticut State University. His demonstrations at the New York State Art Teacher's Association Conferences, Southern Graphics Council and Mid America Print Council Conferences inspire teachers, students and artists to make prints using the safer and greener methods of solarplate etching.

Al – ter – a – tions: change, adaptation, conversion, modification, reworking, transformation, variation, mutation, difference, adjustment, mending, orientation, transmutation, flip-flop, remodeling, reshaping.

Digital and cell phone cameras have brought a new chapter into the art of altering a photograph. Photoshop and apps can take an image from a snap shot into a unique work of art.

There is also an old chapter to the ever-changing story of altering a photograph. The darkroom still has a few tricks up its sleeve. There are the tried and true alternative printing processes such as vandykes, cyanotypes, platinum and bromoils. And don’t forget hand coloring, encaustic, collage and hand made books. Let your imagination be your guide. Creativity is encouraged.

“Alterations” images should start with a photo based image or images. The images could have alterations applied to the image itself, alterations in the printing process or alterations applied in the image presentation. Three-dimensional work is eligible for this call for entry.

A Blurb catalogue of the exhibit with all accepted entries will be available for purchase. Awards are $250 for Juror Choice, $250 Directors Choice from the gallery director, $100 for Visitors Choice and five Honorable Mentions.

Juror’s for “Alterations” will be Jill and Dan Burkholder.

Dan was one of the first photographic artists to embrace digital technology in the early 1990’s. Melding his unique vision with mastery of both the wet and digital darkrooms, his platinum prints are now included in many museums and private collections. Originating the digital-negative process in 1992, Burkholder has helped open doors for all black and white photographers interested in moving into the new electronic technologies. His award-winning book, Making Digital Negatives for Contact Printing, is regarded as the most authoritative work in the field.

Jill Skupin Burkholder is a photographer/ artist whose work includes handcrafted techniques such as bromoil printing, alternative photography process using brushes and lithography ink to create an image, and encaustic techniques using beeswax and resin.

Amanda Smith is the director of A Smith Gallery in Johnson City, Texas. She has won numerous awards for her photography and her work has been included in many collections and publications. THE WPGA EDITORIAL AWARD
Winning images will be published in Intransit Magazine and exhibited in Matera, Italy in October 2011.

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards invites professional and non-professional photographers worldwide to submit their work to the 1st Edition of The WPGA Editorial Award. Challenging personal, emotional or political statements are welcome. Works published or already awarded by other organizations will be accepted in this Award. The theme is open, but the images should address current affairs, cultural and daily life, environmental issues, natural disasters and the aftermath, wars and related conflicts, celebrities’ portraits, sports, etc.

He won the 7th Vevey international photography grant from Switzerland in 2009. In 2009, Akash wins the international ‘Travel photographer of the year ‘title from the international travel photographer of the year competition (TPOY 2009), the most prestigious award in travel photography. He was one of the speakers in the fifth Global Investigative Journalism Conference held at Lillehammer, Norway in 2008 and in TEDxOporto 2011 in Portugal. In 2010 he won The Invisible World Award, juried by Chris Steele-Perkins (Magnum Photos).

Gaetano is curator of the Porta Pepice Gallery in Matera, Italy, and publisher and editor of Intransit Magazine. He has done photography reportages in almost all corners of the world: Greek, Turkey, Albania, Thailand, Birmany, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Morocco, Tunis, Alger, Libya, Niger, Kenya, Madagascar, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, Peru, India,Cuba, Maldives, Mali, Namibia, and Jordan. Traditions, popular celebrations and cultural manifestation became his documentation goals. Gaetano is also a theatre, jazz music and classic and advertising photographer.

The 6th Annual Black and White Spider Awards Nomination & Winners Photo Show was attended by 35,000 online viewers who logged on live from 154 countries to see the climax of the industry's most important event for black and white photography. Thousands of images were received from 68 countries worldwide. The awards international Jury included captains of the industry from Magnum Photos, The Armory Show, Fratelli Alinari, Contrasto to Tate and Hamiltons in London who honored Spider Fellows with 84 coveted title awards in 28 categories. The judges reviewed the entries online for eight weeks before making their final nominations.

"The Spider Awards celebrates photographers who operate at the highest levels of their craft," said Basil O'Brien, the awards Creative Director. BLACK AND WHITE SPIDER AWARDS is the leading international award honoring excellence in black and white photography. This celebrated event shines a spotlight on the best professional and amateur photographers worldwide and honors the finest images with the highest achievements in black and white photography.

Judges

For six years, Black & White Spider Awards has been committed to bringing you world-class Juries selected from the most respected names in the industry. Today it is recognized around the world as the most renowned body of its kind, dedicated to honoring the highest achievements in black & white photography.

Thousands of images are submitted each year with only a few hundred images making it to Nominee status by consensus of the Jury. The Nominee shortlist consists of images that have received the highest percentage of votes overall and is the shortlist from which the winners are decided.

The Jury comprises thirty-nine influential decision makers in Photography, Publishing and Fine Art who review entries and judge the images based on artistic merit, originality, subject, style and ultimately decide the winners.

Voting Criteria

All Judging Panel members vote on the images.

Votes are tallied using the consensus-based Borda Count Method.

Judges rank images in order of preference with each rank having a certain number of points. Statistical weight is placed on the position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, Honorable) given by the judges. The image with the most points is the winner.

We’re looking for something beyond the traditional portrait - more than just a eloquently captured face. We’re looking for uncanny, parody, distortions, subtle suggestions and in-your-face implications. For "Persona" we're looking for portraits devised outside the box (or in one, might also be applicable in certain circumstances!) - we want to see the characters you've captured.

There can more to a superb portrait than a superb likeness of an individual a the testimony to their soul can be visioned way beyond the eyes. How much can you tell us about a person with just one image? Their life story? Perhaps. How did you show the idiosyncrasies, quirks, that make your sitters both physically and emotionally, individuals? We can’t wait to fill our gallery walls with a newly visioned kind of face - portrait as character and caricature.

We’re thrilled to have Chris Buck as inspiration and aesthetic eye for "Persona " His portraits have been surprising us, making us laugh, causing us to ask questions, and inspiring us to think outside of the box for years. His brand of image making (over two decades worth) infuses wit with uncommon gesture and implied meaning. He tells more than a story – he creates tales (sometimes through pure expression). Chris was the first recipient for the Arnold Newman Portrait Prize (2007), which we think he so rightfully deserved! His clients include IBM, Microsoft, Moviefone, Citibank, GQ, Blender and The New York Times Magazine. From uncanny celebrity portraits, to advertising humor, to editorial wisdom, Chris Buck has offered us a very special take on our world of Personas. Juror's Statement:

It was really a joy going through this work - playful, inventive and skillful. I love that there was a leaning towards the surreal and the psychological in much of the work. I want to mention that a number of impressive pieces were cut as they didn't relate strongly enough to the portrait theme, particularly some fashion work and street photography.

2011 Juried Art Show - May 20 - June 30, 2011

The Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show includes artworks addressing gender issues, sexuality, reproduction, sexual politics, romantic relationships, and the human figure. The Juried Art Show will be shown at the Indiana University School of Fine Arts Gallery from May 20 to June 30, 2011, and included in a virtual version of the exhibit on The Kinsey Institute's website.

The Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show premiered in 2006 at the Kinsey Institute Gallery. For the first two years, the emphasis was on erotic art, but beginning in 2008, the parameters of the competition were expanded to include artworks addressing gender issues, sexuality, reproduction, sexual politics, romantic relationships, and the human figure. Last year the exhibition, having outgrown the space available in Morrison Hall, was moved to the Indiana University School of Fine Arts Gallery.

The SoFA Gallery at Indiana University is the region's premier contemporary art space, featuring experimental works by significant regional and nationally known artists as well as by faculty and students within the School of Fine Arts. Exhibits are supplemented with educational performances, lectures, tours and other programs. Events are free and open to the public and the gallery is accessible to people with disabilities. The Indiana University School of Fine Arts Gallery (SoFA Gallery) has been re-named the Grunwald Gallery of Art in honor of John A. Grunwald, thanks to a significant endowed gift from his widow, Rita Grunwald.

"Whenever I make selections for a juried competition I begin with the understanding that my work is inherently subjective. It is not an impartial process but an attempt to find something new within that vast universe we call photography and art. I am trying to mine the works that have been submitted to find the core of an idea, something I have not seen before, some set of visual clues that will coalesce into a coherent whole. I look for an overarching theme, the kernel of an idea, and an enduring vision that will enable us to see and understand the world in a new way. Each of the sections I studied—professional, non-professional, and student portfolios and single images—for this project should give us a view of contemporary ideas in the context of their own world.
I found a number of common themes among the photographs I saw. There were images about people, politics, humanitarian concerns, war, the land, landscape, nature, people’s relationship to the land, and people’s feelings for each other, family, community, and memory. I am always interested in how art can help us remember the moment the present becomes past. We want to remember things as they once were, to hold on to our memories, and use them to address our future. Or maybe this results from our contemporary embrace of new technologies like digital photography and video, which allow us to reexamine our past (and how things change) in new and innovative ways. After all, we live in a technological age in which it is sometimes easier to connect globally and share images across great physical and cultural spaces than it is to communicate across a room. Consider the impact of mobile phones, Facebook, YouTube, and Flicker on how we make and share images, define our communities, and connect our lives with others.

What can we learn from the diverse content found in this selection? What I see is a group of artists who are keenly aware of their surroundings and who travel the world to learn and picture worlds outside their own. So the more we consider the place and context in which they work, the more information we have to help us understand their pictures. Artists today often use the tools of history, memory, archives, and traditional media to construct a new sense of their place. Just as we learn about the past from our own family photographs or heirlooms packed away in a shoebox, these artists create new work from both memories and recently established relationships.
It is most interesting to me that each work, in its own way, provides a subjective experience for the viewer—one rooted in the artist’s experience—which allows us to bring our own understanding to these images."

CATALOGUE
1. LESSEDRA Gallery & Contemporary Art Projects will publish an exhibition catalogue including all accepted artists. Every participating artist is kindly requested to send a brief biography and a personal photograph on a CD or via E-mail for the web presentation of the project.
2. LESSEDRA Gallery & Contemporary Art Projects reserves the right to photograph and reproduce works in the printed catalogue, in CDR, on the Internet gallery and also for advertising, commercial and publicity purposes.

JURY, PRIZES AND EXHIBITION
1. INTERNATIONAL JURY will be appointed to select the winning prints. One of the five international jury members represents LESSEDRA Gallery & Contemporary Art Projects.
2. There will be the following PURCHASE PRIZES:
First Prize (USD 500 = purchase of works by additional agreement and invitation for a solo presentation of the artist in conjunction with the next annual exhibition).
Second Prize (USD 200 = purchase of 3 works).
Third Prize (USD 100 = purchase of 2 works).
5 Special Prizes, each one equal to USD 80 (purchase of 1 work) - a cheque covering the entry fee for participation in the next print annual.
Prize For Young Emerging Artist - USD 300 (in material support for print works) and invitation for a solo presentation of the artist in conjunction with the next annual exhibition.
The Jury has the right to grant more than one Second and Third prizes and also more than one Prize for Young Artist.
3. There is no commission payable to LESSEDRA Gallery & Contemporary Art Projects on the sales of the works.
4. Exhibition with works of all accepted artists will be organized in Lessedra Gallery in Sofia, Bulgaria in the time June 8th – August 28th 2011
Opening reception on June 8th at 7 p.m.

Brainstorm 2011 is a national juried art competition with $2000 in prizes, the top prize being $1000. The Visual Arts Gallery at Governors State University and the Art on Campus Program’s additional locations accommodate over 150 works of art, a large number for a show of this kind. GSU is the home of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park and is located in the South Suburbs of Chicago.

Photography. When Sir John Herschel sought a way to describe exciting new advances in mechanical image-making in 1839, he decided on the word "photography" from the Greek roots for "light" and "writing." Since then, photography has developed its own languages of light. Day or night scenes, subjects in bright or dim light, natural or enhanced illumination all contribute to the language of light in photography today.

Over 1300 photographs were submitted for this exhibition, which turned out to be one of our most international shows to date. Juror Paul Paletti selected images in which light is a key element in the photograph, choosing forty photographs for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery from March 29th through April 23rd, 2011. He also selected an additional thirty-five photographs for the gallery’s "Online Annex." All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalogue available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes.

Paul Paletti is the founder and director of Paul Paletti Gallery in Louisville, KY. Paul earned his BFA in photography from the University of New Mexico, where he studied with Beamont Newhall, Van Deren Coke, and Ray Metzker. He earned his MA in photography at Central Washington University and his JD at the University of Louisville. He has been a partner in the law firm of Sturm, Paletti, and Wilson since 1994. He is an avid collector and supporter of historic and contemporary photography. He has been named a juror for the 2010 PhotoLucida Critical Mass competition.

The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) hosts its Fifth Annual Photography Exhibition and Reception on Saturday, January 8, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. The exhibition features works from local and regional artists using a variety of photographic processes including black and white, color, traditional, alternative, material, and digital. Admission to the opening and exhibition is free. The show continues until February 4, 2011. Gallery hours are 9:30AM-9:00 PM (M-Th), 9:30AM-6:00 PM (F), and 9:00AM-2:00 PM (Sat).
